Are essential oils safe to diffuse around pets?

Short answerUse real caution. Cats in particular lack an enzyme to process certain oil compounds, and many oils can be harmful to cats, dogs and especially birds. If you diffuse, do it lightly in a ventilated room your pet can leave, keep oils off their skin and fur, and check with your vet.

Pets — especially cats and birds — are far more sensitive to essential oils than people, and this is an area where well-meaning use can cause harm. Cats lack certain liver enzymes needed to metabolise compounds like phenols and some terpenes, so oils that are fine for humans can accumulate and become toxic for them.

Safer-diffusing guidelines

  • Ventilation and escape: only diffuse lightly in a room your pet can freely leave.
  • Never apply oils to a pet's skin or fur, and keep bottles out of reach.
  • Birds are extremely sensitive to airborne particles — many owners avoid diffusing near them entirely.
  • Watch for signs — drooling, lethargy, vomiting or breathing trouble means stop and call a vet.

When in doubt, ask your veterinarian which oils and what level of exposure are appropriate for your specific animal. Their tolerance is very different from ours.

“Some oils are safe when used like the Monq diffusers, but some oils will light your lungs up. I would check out what Tisserand says about individual oils.”
