What is yuzu essential oil, and what is it good for?
Short answerYuzu (Citrus junos) is a fragrant Japanese citrus whose cold-pressed peel oil gives a bright, sweet-tart aroma. It's prized in aromatherapy as an uplifting, mood-lifting scent and is the heart of Japan's traditional yuzu-yu winter bath. Diffuse it for a fresh, cheerful atmosphere; as a citrus oil, keep it off sun-exposed skin.
Yuzu is one of Japan's signature aromatic citruses — knobbly, intensely fragrant, and central to Japanese cuisine and bathing culture. Its essential oil, pressed from the peel, carries a complex citrus aroma often described with notes of yuzu, mandarin, grapefruit and bergamot.
How people use it
- Diffusing for mood: bright citrus oils like yuzu are widely used to lift the atmosphere and feel refreshing and cheerful.
- The yuzu-yu tradition: on the winter solstice (tōji), Japanese households float whole yuzu in a hot bath — a warming, fragrant ritual yuzu oil echoes at home.
- Blending: it pairs beautifully with hinoki, lavender and other woods and florals.
One safety note: yuzu is a cold-pressed citrus oil, so like bergamot and lime it can be phototoxic — keep it off skin that will see sunlight, or simply enjoy it by diffusion. Neoi's YUZU range is part of our Japanese aromatherapy collection; see also why citrus oils and sun don't mix.
