Can I use a diffuser as a humidifier, or run it without oils?
Short answerAn ultrasonic diffuser does release a fine water mist and adds a little moisture to the air, and you can absolutely run it with just water — but its tank is far smaller than a real humidifier, so it's not a true substitute. Clean it regularly whether or not you add oil.
Ultrasonic diffusers and humidifiers work on similar technology (vibrating water into a fine mist), which is why people ask if one can do the other's job.
The honest comparison
- Diffuser run with water only: yes, this works and gives a mild misting/humidifying effect plus a quieter, scent-free option.
- But it's not a humidifier: a diffuser's tank is small (often 200–300 ml) and designed to run for a few hours, so it won't meaningfully raise humidity in a dry room the way a dedicated humidifier (with a much larger tank) does.
- Either way, clean it: standing water and mineral buildup need regular cleaning — see how to clean a diffuser.
If your main goal is fragrance, a diffuser (or a reed diffuser) is ideal; if it's humidity, get a real humidifier and keep the diffuser for scent.
